Also since there was a lot of commentary on the word cycle, my assumption is in this context they mean cycle as a series of related artistic works, so the Kier Cycle are all of the paintings depicting Kier. I recommend looking up Literary Cycle on wikipedia for more examples of the word used this way.
Loved this episode! Something regarding the “re-canonicalized” paintings is that it’s just a fancy way of saying “we put Kier in blackface for you”. The board told Natalie to talk about how she got the same gift with her promotion and how happy it made her. She didn’t say anything but her face betrayed a deep discomfort she can’t express. It’s definitely riffing off how religions do the same for deities, Jesus being the biggest example, but here it’s made even ickier thanks to the context of who Kier actually was. Really uncomfortable in a great way.
You explained it perfectly. I think the BW guys got the discomfort but missed how insanely f*cked up and racist it was.
Thanks! And agreed. It’s been really interesting watching reactions to this episode in particular and seeing who clocks that and who doesn’t. My gut tells me people who have experienced what it’s like being from a marginalized community in a corporate work environment will notice it more than those who aren’t marginalized. This season seems to be highlighting this exact thing as well. It’s getting quite educational!
