  1. Pacing makes the amount of time they spend together a bit ambiguous, and I think part of my they compress this section so much comes from themes that could have led to censorship if made too over, or the infamous budget limitations, but there’s definitely a romantic aspect to their relationship here.

Their dynamic is elaborated on in the Manga adaptation that followed the anime (odd instance of a Manga being made following an original anime rather than a Manga adapted into an Animated series, so the Manga details and expands on a lot the anime didn’t have time/budget to).

Really really would love to see your reactions to the Rebuild of Evangelion Movies.

  2. I don’t mean to imply that I know from what mental state the crew is approaching the show, or to imply that their view is invalid for this reason, but these are my thoughts on some of the guys’ frustrations with the show.

I feel like it can be hard for someone who has never been there to understand Shinji’s feelings about Kaworu. And I don’t mean “just” depressed or lonely, I mean truly, truly isolated, the feeling where you could comb the entire world one person at a time and not find one who you would be able to speak to comfortably. That kind of loneliness eats away at you, to the point where even modest kindness and caring from another person can make you latch on like your life depends on it. I see a lot of my past self in Shinji’s immediate attachment to Kaworu, and I don’t think it’s rushed or unexplored.

Ultimately, I think this is a show written by a very hurt person for other very hurt people. People who have not been in the very specific kind of place Hideaki Anno, or Shinji, or I was in, might be able to analyze and understand the show, but to those people, it’s an academic view of things, ‘why does x and y and z work or not work, and what does it mean?’ It’s not feeling the truth of the characters on the screen as an experience you’ve lived. Kaworu’s sequence makes me emotional like no other part of this entire show, and to have it described as falling short only convinces me that I and the blind wave guys, bless them, are approaching the show from two very different places.

That’s why I think Eva is a masterpiece. It’s not about the plot, or what are the angels, or how this and this and that all connect to make sense. Those details exist, if you want to look for them, and also read like a bunch of supplementary material, but it’s not about that. It’s about the feelings and the vibes, and it’s about Hideaki Anno’s personal truths about the human experience. And I love the plot oriented, technical analysis of shows like Breaking Bad or Attack on Titan, but if you look at Eva the same way, I feel like some of it is lost. Eva isn’t a work of writing prowess and technical skill, it’s simple and pure artistic expression.

  3. Fair point about the pacing especially in regards to Kaworu’s lack of screen time to be able to invoke as strong of an emotional resonance for the audience as Shinji did, although it’s definitely more than just 1 day that they spent together considering everything that’s happened in between, albeit shown in a super sped up way lol Thankfully in the manga Kaworu’s around a LOT more 😉
Can’t wait to see your reaction (and Rick’s reaction to the reaction LOL) to the infamous 25+26 LOL

  4. The pacing in this series does feel inconsistent; there are moments where it seems there should be more then there are moments that seem like it could have been less. Excited to see their reaction to the next two episodes. The craziest ending to a series. Having the movie to wrap it all up seemed like an odd choice, but it’s a great movie. They even made a summary of the series in movie form so people can have an option to watch that without having to watch the series before watching End of Evangelion.
